Winter in New England is no five minute project. For our purposes, it really starts around Halloween and really gets crankin' well before Thanksgiving. Undiagnosed seasonal affective disorder is a real problem at my house.
It is for this reason that I have made it a policy to grab onto ANY harbinger of warmer weather, no matter how flimsy. The first landmark date in my calendar is happening this week: Ground Hog Day, February 2. Some people say its all about whether or not some random woodchuck sees his shadow, but I know better. I recognize the veiled reference to certain American made v-twin style motorcycles in the name of the event. Lots of animals hibernate. But they didn't make the focal point of the holiday "Smoky the Bear" for a reason.
Fortunately, the landmark events continue. Pitchers and catchers report to baseball spring training in about 2 weeks, and the Daytona 500 is an excuse to turn up the heat in my living room to 86 degrees (for added realism) and PAR-TAY!! Then its a mercifully short step to news of (or travel plans to) Daytona Beach Bike Week, and by the time college basketball tournaments are over, we have usually had a couple of tee shirt afternoons even in Middletown.
But all starts this week, and I am READY!. See you somewhere down the road....
